A Brief History Of Manchester
The eventful history of Manchester dates back to 79 AD when Agricola a Roman general constructed a fort in a place located to the north of the modern Manchester city as we know it today. It was initially a wooden fort that was later rebuilt in around 200 AD in stone. In about 407 AD the army of the Roman force left the country and the stone fort was left to become a ruin. In the 11th century when the Normans invaded the place Manchester was just a small village however in the 12th century things started changing.
There was a rise in the population of England and the country saw a growth in commerce and trade. In the 13th century the village soon developed into a prosperous town. Gradually the wool industry developed making the town more famous and flourishing. In 1603 unfortunately Manchester suffered greatly because of an epidemic of plague that took the lives of about one fourth of the entire population but the town recovered gradually.
Manchester became famous as a producer of silk from 1637. With the turn of the 18th century Manchester emerged as a great center of industrial activity. The Duke of Bridgewater started to carry in cheap coal to the town in 1761 and it was during this time that history of the town took a new turn with the production of cotton. Many textile factories started mushrooming.
Manchester had a large part to play in the industrial revolution of the UK. There was a diversification of industries in the 20th century as industries like flour milling biscuit making and others started developing. All kinds of service industries like tourism finance and education also began to flourish. Chemicals aerospace and biotechnology were some of the new sectors that made progress in Manchester.
