Whilst Europe struggles to cope with the worst winter in over thirty years there is still a small part of the continent that is enjoying sunshine and temperatures in the 20’s.
The Spanish owned Canary Islands have been part of the EU since the 1970´s – although in fairness these seven islands are in reality located hundreds of miles south of the European mainland, just off the south west coast of Morocco.
And are as far south as you can get whilst still technically remaining in Europe.
As a result of its location the weather in Lanzarote is semi-tropical. With winters warm enough to enjoy days on the beach. Whilst in the summer months the heat is tempered by cooling winds. Encouraging many Spanish residents to desert the oven like heat of the mainland for a break on the islands during August.
But the majority of visitors to the Canaries – and Lanzarote in particular – are British. With visitors from the UK accounting for well over 50% of the arrivals on the island. Encouraged by the ready availability of cheap flights to Lanzarote from operators such as easyJet and Ryanair.
There are many different types of accommodation available to tourists. With around 50% of visitors staying in apartment complexes and hotels and the other 50% opting for privately owned Lanzarote holiday villas. Which are readily available across the island.
As well as great weather and decent accommodation Lanzarote also offers visitors a lot of different things to do and see. Sporty types can take advantage of the climate to indulge in pastimes such as cycling and surfing. Whilst beach lovers will find themselves in paradise – as the island is home to a host of great beaches.
The star attraction are the volcanoes at the Timanfaya National Park. Created by eruptions centuries ago this whole region now looks like a science fiction film. With lava fields and burnt out peaks everywhere. Indeed this spot has been used as the backdrop for a number of classic movies such as One Million Years BC.
Sightseeing’s made easy by the fact that Lanzarote is small in size and can be covered from one end to the other in about an hour. Car hire in Lanzarote is cheap too – certainly by comparison with other Spanish holiday islands. And it is possible to rent a vehicle here from as little as €90 per week.
Whilst Lanzaroe enjoys a great year round climate most locals would agree that the best time to visit is during the autumn months. As the weather is fantastic then and the island is at its least crowded.
